PSYCHOLOGIST, PSYCHOTERAPIST

PSYCHOLOGIST, PSYCHOTERAPIST

mgr Joanna Burgiełł-Szkiel

I am a psychologist by training and an experienced psychotherapist after having undergone numerous trainings.

In 2019, I completed a 4-year training in cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, driven by the desire to deepen my knowledge and therapeutic skills.

However, the learning process in my work did not end there. I am currently participating in a holistic training at the Institute for Integral Gestalt Psychotherapy, seeking new ways to support patients in their healing process. Each new therapeutic approach I learn allows me to better understand the diverse needs of the people I work with.

My commitment to ongoing professional development stems from my belief that expanding my competence is a way to offer more effective and tailored assistance to each patient.

I gained my therapeutic experience for more than ten years working at the SYNAPSIS Foundation, where I dealt with the diagnosis and therapy of people on the autism spectrum of all ages. The Foundation has been in existence for more than 35 years, and its mission is to create a better world for autistic people and their families. These values still guide me in my daily practice of providing psychological assistance. I prioritize the individual needs of each person. With attentiveness and curiosity, I support my clients and customers in discovering, naming and realizing them.

I also completed an internship at the Day Psychiatric Unit of the Wolski Hospital in Warsaw. This experience gave me valuable knowledge and skills in the treatment and therapy of various conditions and disorders in the mental sphere. I have learned the ways of working and therapeutic techniques used in group or individual process by the long-standing staff of the department. I believe that every person has the potential for healing within him or herself, and psychotherapy is an encounter that effectively helps to unleash this potential.

My motto is, “Never give up on a goal just because it takes time to achieve it. Time will pass anyway.” (H. Jackson Brown, Jr.). These are stirring words about how it’s not about time or the pace of recovery, but about committed participation in one’s individual change process. Sometimes the multitude and power of problems overwhelm us, and the modern world rushes in: faster, better, more! My past practice and more than a dozen years of experience in helping people show that we rather need to stop and look at the situation from a broader perspective in sincere and kind contact with the therapist. Then we can rediscover our true selves, strengthen ourselves and heal old relational wounds. Such a safe base also allows us to benefit from effective methods and techniques for overcoming even serious mental disorders.

I cordially invite people with experience of:

  • a sense of emptiness, meaninglessness of life, burnout and exhaustion
  • sadness, grief, unhealed wounds in relationships with loved ones
  • isolation, loneliness, being misunderstood or mismatched
  • increased anxiety, panic attacks, helplessness
  • violence in close relationships, a sense of deep hurt
  • emotional disarray, overwhelmed experiencing feelings
  • neurodiversity (on the autism spectrum or with such suspicion; with ADHD)
  • medical diagnosis of mental disorders: depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.

I also provide psychological diagnosis for autism spectrum and ADHD. I have many years of experience in this field. I have co-managed the diagnostic processes of people of all ages under the guidance of experienced psychiatrists and the rich team of psychologists/pedagogues of the SYNAPSIS Foundation. I invite you to an initial consultation on this topic, as well as to undertake the full diagnostic process at the In-Med center.

An interesting therapeutic area dedicated mainly to people on the autism spectrum, for me, are also group trainings in the convention of Social Skills Training for adults. In such meetings, participants learn to create a common space, to get to know themselves and others, to open up to novelty while maintaining a baseline sense of security, as well as new skills, such as asking for help, refusing and agreeing, self-presentation, assertiveness, or learning about and expressing emotions. You can also apply for such classes through the reception desk of the IN-MED Center, and new groups will be launched once enough people have gathered.
